Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926 Improved but with some teething issues
The ink is barely dry on the earlier than expected release of Window 10 Technical Preview of Build 9926 and it has mostly been a success but a few items have cropped up as one should expect from a preview edition of anything.
Boot Multiple Choice Conundrum
With any preview this is to be expected, but some users have been a bit taken-aback to find that the problems begin as early as the boot and login stage with this new operating system. Rather than booting directly to Windows 10, the user is presented with a boot screen. Apparently according to a blog post on January 23, Microsoft have indicated that this is because of a known bug to be fixed. The reason for the pausing at a boot screen instead of going directly to the login screen is because a second boot option persists which allows the user to uninstall Windows 10 Technical Preview and roll back to a previous operating system (assuming there was a previous one) which effectively creates a multi-boot system, hence the multiple operating system boot screen rearing its ugly head unexpectedly.
The user can either select the correct boot option or wait out the half minute until the pre-selected default option is actioned and then Windows 10 will start to launch.
Start Menu Still Not Ready For Prime Time Yet
The new / revamped Start menu isn't too reliable when hitting the Windows key and expecting it to appear. Sometimes it simply fails to appear. Also, the Icon labels inside the Start menu when it does launch can sometimes end up truncated making them less than readable. Oy vey!
Cortana Has Lost Control of its Reminders
Cortana, the Microsoft answer to Siri and Google Now, is throwing a bit of a tantrum at the moment. Create a detailed reminder and it may not be created as it was intended. Worse still, for the reminders that do get saved correctly, they cannot always be edited in order to make changes later. The reminders that just don't appear in the list after entering them are just.. well.. gone! Ooops.
It is probably recommended to create a reminder as a test to see how it looks first before entering an important one that you do not want to actually miss. Or use your smart phone to set a reminder another way just to be sure. It is beta software after all! Also, completed reminders hang out longer than is comfortable and won't relocate to the history section.
Xbox Live Gamers Distress
The Xbox Live gaming system is not working all that well inside Windows 10. Some victims are getting “fragged” far too many times for comfort. A fix is coming says Microsoft (it won't fix poor gameplay causing early game death, they'll just fix the software...).
Other Known Issues
The battery icon on the lock screen can show up even on desktops that do not have a battery like a laptop. Maybe this is in sympathy for PC owners who wish their system had a battery. Also, battery life isn't as good as would be expected when using Connected Standby mode.
Remote Desktop sessions are coming through pixilated and less easily visible so fixing PCs via technical support won't be so easy under the current build of Windows 10.
And if you cannot find the music app. Don't worry about it. It disappears from time to time.
