A new SSD being deployed into the latest Samsung laptop computers will put other solid state drives to shame. The new Samsung SM951 MLC flash SSD uses PCIe M.2 instead of SATA type storage which improves the read times to 2,150 MB/s for the PCIe 3.0 version. The older PCIe 2.0 version is still impressive with 1,600 MB/s read, 1,350 MB/s write performance and randomized speeds of 130,000 IOPS read and 85,000 IOPS write with their new storage. The SSD operates as 1Xnm MLC NAND flash technology.

To put this in perspective, other solid state drives usually offer 400-600 MB/s read and write performance, with traditional platter-based hard drives falling to around 50-60 MB/s for similar file access.

PCIe Used In Graphics Cards Too

The PCIe is actually the same interface that is used with graphics cards to store core information used when processing graphics for display. This advancement puts the PCIe 3.0 technology combined with the Samsung MLC flash SSD at four times the current solid state drive performance for storage.

Low Energy Use, Especially in Standby Mode

Energy consumption is extremely low with these SSDs too, especially when they are dormant in standby mode where energy use is almost nil. Good news for anyone wanting to buy an ultrabook laptop with a SSD for the longer battery life by using one with an ultra low voltage Intel Core chipset.

With standard performance, for each watt of power consumed, 450MB/s of data reading and 250MB/s of data writing can be completed.

The Samsung SSD is the first of its kind to adopt the PCI-SIG L1.2 low power standby mode which requires the standards compliant device to turn off the high-speed circuits when the PC is put into either hibernation or sleep mode.

Available Sizes

The Samsung SM951 will be available in 128 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB size options.

Availability

This new form of storage will first be made available to PC manufacturers of devices and direct to market OEMs. It is now in the mass production phrase. It is expected to reach the retail market later once PC manufacturer demand is being managed effectively by supplies.
