Game Review: Pursuit of Light - Get It For Free For A Limited Time Only!

Apple chooses a game app every week and offers it for free until next week’s choice. This week, the game featured for free is the indie game “Pursuit of Light”. When I saw it as a featured I downloaded it with no second thought, as the premise and visuals won me over immediately.

The game takes place in the dream of a girl who is trying to bring back the light to the world, and wake up from her never-ending slumber. However, many dangers await her on her journey to gather the light fragments and it’s up to you to guide her safely through all the levels.

Gameplay

The gameplay and controls are very simple, although the same can’t be said for the levels themselves. You control the little girl with the two buttons located on the right and left sides at the bottom of the screen. The girl moves on the platform stairs, each of which has either a moon or a star symbol. The same goes for the buttons, so you tap the appropriate one to have her jump from stair to stair. If you press the wrong button you lose. You can also do a double jump by tapping the button twice.

Pursuit of Light Screenshot 2So far so good but that can’t be all, right? It can’t be so simple, right? Indeed, there’s more to it and I’m going to explain now. Most stairs are safe to jump on, but there are stairs that are not so innocent. In many of them sharp spikes appear and disappear every few seconds, for example; in others, dangerous obstacles are hanging above them and move up and down also every few seconds, or have arrows that are thrown at you (that’s when you need the double jump the most). Sometimes the obstacles are not present to one stair but even to two or three consecutive ones.

Also, you need to be careful with the buttons because it is really easy to get confused and press the wrong one, and that’s very annoying when it happens. When you reach the final stair of a level you collect a light remnant and move on to the next. The level number is up to 80 but don’t expect uniqueness to all of them. Some will seem similar to others and although I wasn’t bothered by it, I can imagine it might bore some players.

I didn’t notice any lagging or difficulty controlling the girl. The touch controls are smooth and intuitive and the same goes for the gameplay as well.

Last but not least, bear in mind that despite the difficulty that you will experience because of the obstacles, there is always a way to win so don’t give up easily.

The game’s stronger point is with no doubt its stunning visuals. You will feel like you’re inside a fairy tale and the calming music makes the experience even more magical.

Conclusion

Pursuit of Light is a gorgeous platform game that is worth your time and attention. What’s more, you can now grab it for free and experience the magical atmosphere it offers. Indie games like this definitely deserve our support.
