Game Review: Pauli's Adventure Island [iOS, Android, Windows]
Today’s review is about an adorable and fun little platformer with a retro touch, Pauli’s Adventure Island, developed by HEJVISJ. If you are a fan of games like Super Mario World, I’m sure you’ll appreciate PAI as well. But without further ado, lets jump right into the review.
Plot
Bunny buddies Pauli and Gemmi discover that their beloved island has been overrun by mechanical monsters that are determined to build an enormous, exclusive resort. Now it’s up to Pauli and Gemmi to do something about the invaders, of course with your valuable help.
Gameplay
Pauli’s Adventure Island is a platformer in which you perform simple actions, e.g. running, jumping, attacking enemies, and move from level to level and world to world. There are 30+ levels and a total of 4 worlds available. Before each level you can choose to play either as Pauli or Gemmi, explore rolling hills, mysterious forests, dark caves, and more, and at the end of each world you have to face a mechanical monster boss.
The levels take place in colorful worlds and your task is to collect all stars and all 3 of the clovers that are hidden around you and on secret locations. You will have to face many various enemies that you can defeat by jumping on them or by spinning near them, and obstacles such as moving platforms, spikes and more.
You will notice a heart either yellow or red following your every step. Well, the yellow heart means that your life is full and if you stubble upon an enemy it will turn red which means that on the next accident, you're lost. You can find hearts to collect in many places so it's hard to actually die.
The difficulty is not high and it took me 30'-40' to clear the first world with a perfect score. I wouldn’t mind more difficulty and challenge but the simplicity of it is also highly appreciated because it helps you relax and enjoy some good time with something easy and enjoyable. The controls are also very intuitive and basic for a platformer of this style and you can also customize them from the settings.
Pricing & Availability
Pauli’s Adventure Island is available on the App Store, Google Play and Windows Store. The smartphone version is free with a $1.99 in-app purchase that removes ads and the Windows Store version is available for $1.99.
Graphics & Sounds
The 2D graphics together with the brightness of the colors and the variety of them, create a result that will make you feel like you’re inside a kids’ cartoon. It is indeed a game that kids and adults alike will enjoy. I loved how crystal-clear the colors are and the character designs. The two main bunnies are adorable to say the least, but the enemies had their own charm as well. The music was cheerful but depending on the level it could become more serious.
Conclusion
Pauli’s Adventure Island is not a platformer that will impress you or introduce you to new elements, and gameplay you haven’t seen before. It is however, very enjoyable, fairly easy, with cute designs and a variety of levels. I wouldn’t call it a challenging game but it is not a title you’ll get bored of either. It has a charm that drives you to play level after level and at least in my case, I really wanted a perfect score or I didn’t feel satisfied.
