FLIR Sytems, a company specializing in thermal imaging, has released a special iPhone case called the FLIR One that turns your smartphone into an infrared imaging device that can see through walls.

The amazing device became available for pre-order on July 23rd and is expected to become available in Apple store and on Apple.com in August.

Science Fiction Becoming Science Fact?

It is a surprisingly lightweight accessory can convert any iPhone 5 or 5s into a powerful image rendering tool that can detect the heat signatures of individuals and objects, even when the view is obstructed by a wall.

In the recent past, a product like this would be viewed as pure science fiction. With this invention we're seeing technology that was previously used primarily by law enforcement and military released to anyone who has a new iPhone.

The FLIR One is the first thermal imaging case for the iPhone, making it the first accessory that lets you "see through" objects.

Possible Uses and Applications

The new accessory has a host of potential practical applications- from detecting energy/heat leaks in a home to being able to see people, animals, and other objects in complete darkness.

Overall, the FLIR One brings incredible imaging capabilities to a smartphone for a decent price at only $349.

The device is marketed as a "personal thermal imaging device" and it really doesn't fall short in any category.

In fact, when you consider the fact that the iPhone 5 has such a large screen in comparison to most standalone thermal imagers (which are typically much more expensive), the FLIR One may be the most practical and affordable way to access infrared imaging at home without spending $500-$1000 on a thermographic camera.

Is There Anything Else Like It?

Two years ago TIME Magazine reported that researchers were "around the corner" from inventing a way to have x-ray vision on a smartphone. While we haven't see a real x-ray filter or app yet, there are plenty of joke/prank apps out there that are good for a few laughs.
