Timely Alarm Clock Android Review

Timely Alarm Clock is the type of elegant app that you tend to see on the iPhone but rarely makes its way over to Android. In this case, here we have a very pretty alarm clock which also tells the time, and has a stopwatch.

Main interface

The interface is split into three areas where swiping left or right will move elegantly between them. There is the alarm, the clock and the timer / stopwatch.

Alarm Clock

The alarm clock lists all the currently set alarms. Scrolling down will reveal more of them. These alarms can be toggled on/off. Their alarm frequency is shown, the alarm tune selected, and whether they will have Smart Rise turned on.

Smart Rise is an option with the alarm where a more subtle wake up tune will be played 30 minutes before the main alarm. The idea is that this alarm will wake the person up more gently where they may be encouraged to wake up without the jolt of a full on alarm going off.

The initial alarm is set with just the time. It needs to be tapped on a second time when it is displayed in the alarm list in order to get into the other settings like Vibrate, Tune selected, Puzzle challenge to turn off, Smart Rise, and repeating alarm settings.

Clock

The clock is dark and displays prominent numbers but with the seconds counter and the AM / PM indicator hard to see. The day and date are shown and any alarm set will also appear here. The alarm display will also rotate around when the device is in landscape mode.

Timer / Stopwatch

The timer or stopwatch is a little less useful than the other features. Here one needs to move the dial around the add time to the timer. This is okay when the countdown is short, but if it stretches into hours then this could get tedious quickly.

When the countdown timer is actually counting down then the display shows the hours, minutes and seconds to go. Unfortunately, the hour lettering is so tiny that it is almost impossible to see so the timer is only really usable when the countdown is for one hour of less. A shame.

Themes

There are several clock themes which can be changed the clock face from analog to digital. The color themes also change the background and effects.

Day Mode and Night Mode

There is Night Mode which tones down the background and the foreground so it is barely visible in daylight but perfect for a dark room. This option is access via the options bar in the bottom right corner.

Verdict

For sheer beauty and elegance, Timely Alarm Clock has it nailed. Setting the alarm twice to edit it properly is a little inconvenient and the timer isn't much use beyond 59 minutes. The clock is nice. For better alarm management, the Alarm Clock app is a better choice. In all other respects, Timely is good.
