Lenovo Vibe X2 Pro Brings Tri-color Casing and Selfies to the mix

Lenovo Vibe X2 Pro Brings Tri-color Casing and Selfies to the mix

Unadorned by an obstructive case, the new Lenovo Vibe X2 Pro is a tri-colored case which really stands out from the crowd of black cased smart phone alternatives. The super thin 7 millimeters thickness of the phone is also most evident with the design ascents that only serve to highlight how thin the device really is.

Display

The 5.3-inch 1080p display with 416 ppi pixel density sits neatly in the space between average sized and phablets these days. The usual IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen is included here.

Processor

Lenovo has opted to use the new 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 SoC here with its quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 & quad-core 1.0 GHz Cortex-A53 processor in a 28nm LP manufacturing process. Either of these quad-core A53s can be running at once depending on the demands of the smart phone at the time. There is the Adreno 405 GPU included which powers the graphics.

Communications

The Qualcomm SnapDragon 615 SoC comes with an integrated 4G LTE category 4 radio, DVD-HSPA+ support, GSM support, wireless 802.11 ac in a dual-band configuration, Wi-Fi hotspot, and Bluetooth 4.0 LE (low energy consumption).

There is a dual SIM card feature (including slots for Nano SIMs) to plug into two different cellphone service providers and the dual standby mode means one can stay connected to two cell towers at the same time if necessary.

There is also the ubiquitous GLONASS and A-GPS for faster but less accurate and slower but more pin-point location tracking.

Memory and Storage

The model comes with 2 GB of memory and 32 GM of internal storage. This will ensure that Android runs smoothly and doesn't experience bottlenecks on performance. The 32 GB of internal storage is ample to install many apps and store their data on the device. There is also a microSD slot compatible with microSD and microSDXC cards with a 128 GB capacity.

Cameras

A 13 megapixel shooter with autofocus, LED flash, Geo-tagging, face detection, touch focus, HDR and panorama features is included. The front-facing camera though is something special with a 13 megapixel sensor to take selfies galore (up from 5-megapixels front-facing camera on the Lenovo Vibe X2 model).

Video is a little disappointing with no Ultra 4K video support. Here the video is still 1080p at 30 frames per second (so not even a bump up to 60 frames per second for smoother playback after finishing recording).

There is also the Lenovo VIBE Xtension Selfie Flash which either plugs directly into the 3.5mm headphone socket at the top of the smart phone (and can swivel around where you want it) or it can be hand-held. This is a pricey extra which can provide a far better lighting experience compared to the small LED flash that is included on any smart phone. More information on this extra product is covered in our article here.

Software

The Vibe X2 Pro will come with the Android OS v4.4.x (KitKat) instead of the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop which perhaps is a surprise there. The Vibe 2.0 user interface is overlaid as a skin over the top of Android.

Other Details

There are just the three sensors: Accelerometer, proximity, and compass so little to please people interested in fitness; they'll need a smart watch for that. The battery is a slimline non-removable Lithium polymer 2,410 mAh one which is closer to the 3,000 mAh batteries that come with most phablets these days and should keep the device powered most of the day. The microUSB 2.0 port is present for charging; so no faster USB 3.0 port here.

The weight is only 140 grams which is about right for this kind of phone. The measurements are 146.3 x 71 x 7 mm. The X2 Pro will come in Champagne Gold, Rock Pink or Electric Blue in the layered design.

The Lenovo Vibe X2 Pro is due for wide international release starting in April. Debuted at the CES 2015. Pricing is still to be confirmed.
