Its no secret that electronic games can be great educational tools, as fun-filled learning is a fundamental concept in today's academic school of thought.

Teaching specialists agree that entertaining and challenging activities are much easier to learn from than boring and mundane lessons.

We've already covered some of the best language learning software, and although all of those are useful for their intended applications, Google Chrome just recently introduced its own web-based spelling word game contribution called Spell Up

Building Word Towers with Your Voice

Its about time someone utilized modern voice recognition to create a good virtual spelling bee game.

Spell Up is just that - a web game that challenges you to build the highest word tower you can by spelling out words vocally, one letter at a time.

This is another neat addition to the Chrome browser, which Google has creatively called a "Chrome Experiment."

So the new Spell Up game is compatible with any device that can run Chrome, a real advantage over any other desktop-based spelling software that could be considered an alternative.

What's the Gameplay Like?

According to Google's introduction of the game on May 13th, players spell out the words they hear via their phone, tablet, laptop, or headset microphone.

Each word you spell right gets stacked on the word before it. But be careful though, because one wrong letter will cause the entire tower to collapse. As the tower gets higher, the words become more difficult to spell.

When you take into consideration the fact that you have to patiently pronounce each letter individually, it is easy to see how this game could become tedious and pressuring in the higher levels, much like a real spelling bee.

It should also be noted that this is a game that you'll want to play in a quiet environment, as a little bit of background noise could collapse your entire word tower.

In addition to spelling words aloud, the game also challenges players with word jumbles and mystery words.

With each challenge you complete you'll earn coins and bonuses that will help you reach the next level, and the tasks become more difficult as you build a higher word tower.

For Spellers of All Skill Levels

Spell Up is more than just a game for people who can't spell well, it can also be helpful for expert spellers who need to brush up before a major spelling bee, as the game can accommodate a diverse range of skill levels.

The game developers have stated that they worked with teachers and web designers to make the interface as educational as possible.

Although Spell Up can also be played on iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad, players would have to type in the letters instead of speaking them, as the Google voice recognition side of the game is only available on Android devices.
