15 Free MMORPGs for Android
MMORPGs, massively multiplayer online role-playing games, occupy the niche with the highest player devotion degree. Even social science notes that MMOPRG players are known for skipping on their social and family lives in favor of fantasy and sci-fi worlds, where they can be awesome heroes or gangsters, mythical creatures, star fleet commanders and space explorers. In other words, these games offer an unprecedented chance to escape reality and dive head over heels into the alternative fantasy worlds, where players interact with each other as game characters.
Usually, the main elements present in a MMORPG are character stats and leveling up, quests or missions, gear or ammo, alliances or guilds, PvP and multiplayer co-op when fighting big boss battles, or other guilds.
There is no shortage of good mobile MMORPGs, and we have compiled a list of new and veteran games, but supported and with vibrant communities, that fall into this category. Of course, there is no way to encompass all worthy games in one list, but we have tried to add a few fresh entries to the established titles.
Note for the newcomers to MMORPGs: the peculiarities of the genre require Internet connection and a good deal of your device's resources – RAM and storage. Even though system requirements differ from game to game, I suggest you check out supported devices and minimum requirements before you proceed with the download.
Oh, "free" here means freemium - most of these games are free-to-play, which means you can play without spending a cent, but if you have a few bucks to spare, you can make your progress faster.
Legion of Heroes by NEXON M Inc.
One of the most impressive releases of 2014 in the niche was Legion of Heroes – a full 3D mobile MMORPG with a deep and complex gameplay, visually impressive world and a great fantasy story to follow and unravel. Featuring over 100 unique heroes, it lets you join a guild and explore the massive world full of adventure and dangers, which is best experienced in group. Its fantasy world revolves around an eternal fight of good and evil, where fairies joined humans to lock down an evil force. Alas, nothing lasts forever, and the evil force senses the coming of a great hero turned villain, who can set it free. You will battle in epic 45 versus 45 PvPs and develop your tactical combat skills. Finally, you can choose sides and either join the good guys to fight evil, or join the evil itself and help bring doom to the beautiful fantasy lands, and dungeons.
The Infinite Black - FREE MMO by Spellbook
The Infinite Black is a long-time classic, and probably the first title that comes to mind when you think of mobile MMORPGs, blending adventure and space combat in an impressive and desperately addicting free-to-play game – and lets you play and become a part of a vast online community of dedicated space explorers. You will engage in awesome fleet on fleet battles, achieve some of the extensive 6000+ goodies and customize your ships to your heart's content. This is not to mention the huge arsenal of armor, engines and weapons. Here, too, you will be able to join an alliance or a corporation, if you want to try your chances at dominating this vast sci-fi world, where humans fight, trade and make friends with aliens. Ultimately, the game is about a galactic warfare, so get ready to engage in a vibrant militaristic community, where everything, social and economic policies are bound by your war goals. You can be either a trader, or a warlord, or better yet an Alliance Overlord, if you have what it takes and your group is well organized. It's a real time game, so perfect group coordination is important.
Zombie Raiders Beta by MadSkill Game Studios, LLC.
Still in beta, Zombie Raiders has the potential to become your next favorite game. It takes place in the post-apocalyptic world inhabited by rotting zombies, where you and your friends form clans to protect each other, scavenge for resources (for how else can a modern human survive after the zombocalypse?), build your fortification structures and forge weapons and tools. It is surprisingly addicting and has some unique features in an overall familiar style. Since it is still a work in progress, you may encounter an element you dislike, like ads or the fact that you need to rely on gems to craft stuff, but what game is without a flaw these days? Overall, it is a very addicting and entertaining experience.
School of Chaos Online MMORPG by VNL Entertainment Ltd
More zombies on the list, but this time they ate the teachers (right, we don't need no education!) and now your school is a total.. chaos, where all you do is kick somebody's butt in the fight for respect, try to find your flock and make a clan, level up your ammo and fight some more. Basically, the game takes you to a somewhat hyperbolic American school, where bullies rule the party, and everyone else tries to survive. The game lets you create your own quests and play them with your friends, explore the great 3D open world, customize your characters using 5 billion+ possibilities, trade, master your fighting moves. The battles are real time, and you will love the abundance of weapons and equipment, many of rare ones you will be able to forge on your own. Oh, and don't forget the pets, pet training and a vast community to play with.
Order & Chaos Online by Gameloft
Order & Chaos is most likely #1 on many gamers' lists for this genre. On mobile, Order & Chaos is classic, and if you are a newcomer to the genre, you may as well begin with this one. A vast fantasy world, an abundance of interesting quests, great opportunities to be a hero, to form guilds with your friends, or join an existing one – become a part of this large community to get the taste of a quality mobile MMORPG. Last year, it came with a hefty price tag, but Gameloft eventually made it a free-to-play title. In its core, Order & Chaos is a World of Warcraft-based game, and the idea might not be the most original one, but it is impressively adapted to touch screen. It has all it takes to make a perfect MMORPG – race/class customization, streamlined storyline that helps you get through a large chunk of leveling, active and passive skills, a very large open world, huge maps, excellent quest writing that will let you enjoy quests a lot more if you read them. Plus, it offers plenty of loot, professions, guilds, auction houses, cool races and classes, and looks great on bigger screens.
RPG IRUNA Online MMORPG
Iruna may not be new, but it is still a solid choice if you are looking for a fun MMOPRG that is free and offers great 3D visual representation and a large variety of things to do. The world of Iruna is divided into 4 lands, or countries – an intellectual Republic of Parul, the military Empire of Slebinia, megalopolis Federation of Mithurna and the Monarchy of the Elves – Darkan. Just like a classic PC RPG, Iruna features chatting, co-op play, and several classes of heroes, like Mages and Warriors. You start off as an Adventurer, and the choice of profession you make, Mage or Warrior, will define into which other professions you will be able to evolve as the 2nd and 3rd tier professions. A whole lot of interesting quests and an immersing world with a buzzing community make for a great free-to-play long-term adventure.
Arcane Legends: MMO RPG by Spacetime Games
Arcane Legends is one of the Legends franchise by Spacetime Studios. Its fast-paced tactical combat, great co-op and PvP battles are generously spiced up by a great sense of humor and a unique, engrossing storyline to follow. It supports cross-platform play on Android, iOS and desktop browser, featuring three hero classes – the classic triad of a warrior, mage and rogue, with their unique skills and abilities that shine best when party members have different heroes and skills combined. In terms of combat, you will be able to choose the combat style you prefer – quick blitzkriegs or long-term attacks that exhaust the opponent. Arcane Legends is one of the high-rep titles on the list, featuring awesome 3D design, tons of impressive areas and exciting content to explore and customize. If you are a MMORPG first-timer, you can't go wrong with Arcane Legends.
Kritika: the White Knights by Gamevil
A classic Gamevil title, Kritika lets you be one of the awesome champions – the Crimson assassin, the Dark Valkyrie, the Cat Acrobat, the Berserker and the shadow mage. You will train powerful pets to make you stronger and fight in impressive battles across the span of 70+ stages in Stage mode and 60+ floors in the Tower of Tribulation. Arena, PvP mode and Monster Wave mode, melee and a great fantasy world make it an easy choice if you haven't played it, yet. It is also full of slaughter and sports a fancy anime style, if these are your quality criteria. The gameplay is accessible and you will want to explore the beautiful world of Kyrenia ruled by a violent Caleb, whose tyranny you must overthrow. Impressive and immersing, Kritika is another classic on the list.
RPG Elemental Knights(3D MMO) by Winlight Co.,Ltd.-eko
Three million downloads and counting, Elemental Knights is for the anime lovers. Featuring a great deal of job-classes (monks, bishops, thieves, mages, knights, wizards) and a gazillion of items and their combinations, cosplay gear, 100+ quests, NPCs, it lets you create small parties of four to interact and make friends, and venture out on extensive adventures across numerous locations from deserts to dungeons, lush forests and subterranean canals. This fantasy storyline has a well thought-through complex web of events that span across some 300 years that follow tragic events that awoken dragons from their long sleep. As usual, save the world – no one else can.
Book of Heroes by Venan Entertainment
This deep fantasy world lets you choose among the three hero classes - a Shadow Walker, War Mage or Justicar, with tons of customization options. Of course, there are chats, guilds and PvP, as well as real-time multiplayer mode, 300+ quests and massive loot opportunities. The monster boss battles and eerie dungeons, cool ammo and gear, awesome skill updates and an engrossing fantasy world to dive into – all free-to-play, what else do you need to start playing? The game features wonderful artwork and accessible gameplay, and thanks to regular updates it stays relevant and offers new areas to explore and new quests to follow. This one stands apart thanks to its unique design that creates a special atmosphere and personality for the game abundant in colorful characters, great battles, creepy dungeons, cool customization options and an overall massive fantasy world with some pretty hard challenges. Very addicting, too.
Avatar Fight - MMORPG game by GameJoy Inc
Avatar Fight has a neat balance of simplicity and complexity, fun and challenges wrapped in a healthy doze of humor that centers on the PvP and guild battles. You have to become a member of a powerful guild, or work hard on your own guild if you want to get anywhere in this game, and it's a great way to make new friends. It is also a nice social skill training ground for some people in your guild will be another guild's spies, or parasites living off of your hard work, so the complexity of human interactions has great influence here. You play as an avatar, fighting, completing leveling up missions and gaining XP points, raising pets (dragons, dinosaurs, werewolves), forging and collecting weapons and armor. You can be a knight, a ninja, a vampire or a pirate, and many more characters. The game features an auction house, a single player league and a hero tower, as well as a guild league and guild versus guild team combat.
Pocket Starships MMO / MMORPG by Spectacle Games Publishing Inc.
Pocket Starships is a cross-platform space combat you can play on your mobile devices and from your PC browser. You get to forge a strong alliance to combat other alliances in real-time space battles to dominate Pocket Starships galaxy. The game features a complex, yet streamlined system of item and starship crafting and upgrading while the galaxy is vast and inviting. The game features a chat and massive PvP battles. The community of this game is really great, and if you think you have got what it takes to maintain an immaculate reputation of a die hard galactic warlord, hop on this fun ride. The gameplay is well paced, and you will be able to level up and play without spending a dime.
Brave Trials by IGG.COM
Fans of the anime – this way. Brave Trials is a real-time action adventure, where you get to explore a massive fantasy world that needs a hero like you to establish justice. It is fun, easy to follow, and sports some unique features alongside classic MMORPG elements. The intense combat features beautiful effects and the overall design is very smooth while the epic adventure will send you traveling across dimensions, and of course, you get to save the world. The game features Arena, PvP, Party trials, and great boss fights. There are over 120 skills to master and faen to collect. It is a good fit for beginners since it is relatively easy to get to a high level within one wek of a thorough and dedicated gameplay.
Warspear Online MMORPG by AIGRIND
If you are a fan of the old school 2D classics, check out Warspear. It is immensely popular, with its great fantasy world Arinar, and heroes fighting and forging their super-powerful ammo, weapons, magic artifacts and tons of loot. The game features Arena and 2x2, 3x3 and 5x5 PvP, thousands of awe-inspiring bosses, creepy dungeons, guild building tools and chats – everything an MMORPG needs. Warspear is a good-earned veteran with loyal fan base and devoted developers releasing big updates every now and then, and minor updates regularly. This means you will have new lands to conquer, new character levels to reach and 1000+ of quests to venture on. You will choose between 4 races that form 2 alliances - Firstborn and Chosen vs Mountain Clans and Forsaken, which in their turn have 12 classes, each with unique skills - Blade Dancer, Ranger, Druid; Paladin, Priest, Mage; Barbarian, Rogue, Shaman; Warlock, Necromancer and Death Knight complete with profound character customization, up to clothing items and hairdos.
Galaxy on Fire™ - Alliances by Deep Silver
Galaxy on Fire - Alliances is primarily a strategy MMO, but it also has strong elements of RPG, and ultimately, it is my personal #1 choice for today's list. It is not your regular Galaxy on Fire gameplay, if you are familiar with the franchise. If not, better for you because you would come without any expectations whatsoever, and will be able to appreciate its greatness. My only word of warning is to give it some time – don't rush into conclusions. Its micromanagement system might be a bit overwhelming at a first glance, but once you get the hang of – there is no escaping its undeniable charm. You get to choose among the three races – Terran (humans, pirates and cyborgs - dominant), Nivelian (technologically advanced reptiles) and Vossk (the four-eyed, physically stronger than Terrans and Nivelians and hostile to both, crustacean). You get to build out and manage your planetary colonies, and eventually join an alliance to fight for galactic domination. The missions are engrossing, and the 3D sci-fi design is dazzling. By far, GoF Alliances is one of the best new entries at par with the veterans.
